Can your team legally use ChatGPT in the UAE?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: how they use it matters a great deal.

There is no law in the UAE that bans staff from using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Copilot at work. What the law does regulate is what data goes into them.

Where it gets risky

Pasting personal data, such as a customer's name and complaint, a CV or a patient note, into a public AI tool is processing under data protection law. On a free personal account, that data may be retained and used for training, and it is probably stored outside the UAE.

A safe setup, in four steps

  1. Pick approved tools and buy business licences, so training on your inputs is off and data terms are contractual.
  2. Tie access to company accounts with single sign-on. No personal accounts for work.
  3. Write a one-page rule sheet: what can go in, what never goes in, and who to ask.
  4. Keep a simple record of which tools are approved and how they are configured.

What about sensitive sectors?

If you handle health, financial or legal data, assume stricter rules. Many firms in these sectors use a private model hosted in-country instead of a public tool. That is one of the most common reasons clients come to us for private generative AI.
